Piedmont Local Hazard Mitigation Plan

On August 5, 2019, the Piedmont City Council adopted a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). Hazard mitigation planning is a process for state and local governments to identify community-level policies and actions to mitigate and reduce the impacts of natural hazards. Adoption and implementation of the LHMP will help reduce the impacts of natural hazards to the citizens, property, and critical infrastructure in the City. The LHMP must be updated every five years.

Wildfire, drought, earthquake, and flood are just a few of the hazards that might impact the Piedmont community.  A robust LHMP forms the foundation for Piedmont’s long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses by breaking the repeated cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction. The City will be better positioned to respond and recover when disasters occur when a LHMP in place.

Hayward Fault Special Studies Zone

Piedmont is entirely outside the Hayward Fault Special Studies Zone. The fault lies approximately a quarter mile east of the city limits.

Flood Map

No portion of Piedmont is within the 100-year flood plain of any creek or waterway, All properties are classified as Zone C on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps. Property owners who experience basement flooding due to soil water seepage are encouraged to purchase flood insurance.

Although Piedmont is not in the flood plain, we will still be affected by expected sea level rise. Check out this map for an interactive look at roadways, houses and vulnerable populations that will be affected by changes in the Bay's water level.

Bay Adapt is a regional organization adapting to sea level rise in the Bay Area. There is a range of possible outcomes, but the anticipated sea level rise will displace several thousand people and radically change the Bay Area. To learn more, read through their website here
