401 Hampton building and Piedmont Play School use agreement

City of Piedmont statement on 401 Hampton building and Piedmont Play School use transition

Published November 3, 2025

For decades, Piedmont Play School has been part of the fabric of the Piedmont community, providing generations of children with a nurturing space to learn and grow. The City deeply values that history and the lasting contributions of Piedmont Play School’s educators, families, and volunteers.

When the building at 401 Hampton Road was constructed in 1999, the City entered into a 25-year agreement with Piedmont Play School granting use of the space through June 2025, in recognition of the community donations that contributed a substantial portion of construction costs. With that period now over, the City has provided Piedmont Play School use of the space for an additional 12-month period beyond the terms of the agreement – through June 2026 – to support a smooth transition.

As the City looks ahead, we must ensure that our limited public facilities are used in ways that best meet the needs of the entire Piedmont community.

Community demand for programming has grown substantially in recent years. Meanwhile, the City is grappling with increasingly severe space constraints due to aging infrastructure, and is now renting space from private parties to meet program needs.

Using the 401 Hampton building for City run programming will provide much-needed flexibility and ensure that public assets are used efficiently and fairly for the benefit of all residents.
